Welcome Back!

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Welcome back to a new school year. I will be your child’s first grade teacher. I look forward to teaching your child. Let’s work together to encourage, reinforce and support your child in learning.

Please be aware that First Grade is very different from Kindergarten.

*There are weekly assessments to review the week's lessons and work.  There will be no review sheets for each assessment. Classwork, homework, as well as classroom behavior and participation will be reflected in their grades.

*Your child is expected to be responsible for his/her own work and actions in school. Their classroom and overall behavior will be reflected in their Character Development. This will be the factor in the awards such as First and Second Honors. Any character grade that is lower than an A overall will not be entitled to First Honors. Any C will also prohibit your child from any rewards. Excessive lateness will also result in no Honors or Awards. With the shift to the Common Core, each child will be required to read about 20 books this year. Some will be read at home and some will be read during class. This is required by the New York State Department of Education. I will be focusing on their comprehension skills, sequence of events as well as vocabulary and writing.

As part of OLQM’s advancement in technology, daily lesson plans, homework and other important advisories will be posted on the school’s blog, olqmnyc.blogspot.com. Please check this blog frequently for any pertinent information regarding your child’s daily assignments.

School begins at 8am and will end at 3:15pm. Breakfast begins at 7:15am. Your child is not allowed to be in the classrooms until 7:45am.
The following is a list of basic rules and policies for your child:
